David Cardenas Centeno

When David Cardenas Centeno, a Nicaraguan asylum seeker, father of three, and construction worker in North Carolina, was detained by ICE during a routine immigration appointment in Charlotte, his family lost contact with him just as he entered a serious medical crisis. After being transferred to Atrium Health Pineville with severe heart complications, David was unable to communicate with his wife and children, and neither family representatives nor faith leaders were allowed to visit him despite repeated attempts. Siembra worked closely with the family to identify immediate needs, build trust, and develop a strategy to secure communication and support. Through volunteer accompaniment, hospital delegations, coordination with faith leaders and elected officials, and media outreach, community pressure grew around the family’s demand to be able to contact David and ensure his wellbeing. Within days, Cecilia was able to speak with her husband, visit him in the hospital, and ICE ultimately released David from custody due to his medical condition. This campaign highlights the role that public pressure and strategic organizing can play in supporting families facing detention.
